HOLEY SH*T!
Back in the early 1980s Richard Kaufman, Derek Dingle and Ken Krenzel created Holy P.O.D., a visual version of Alex Elmsley’s classic Point of Departure, from a card change effect idea by Gerard Majax.
And now Pete Firman and Anthony Owen have brought it bang into the 21st century with…
HOLEY SH*T!
"A stunningly visual piece of modern card magic" Jeff McBride
"JESUS!" Andy Nyman
"This is one of the best vanishes of a single playing card I have ever seen!" Marc Paul
"With this trick even I could get a TV series!" John Archer
"I've been doing Holy P.O.D. since I first read it in Richard's Almanac.
It's one of the hidden gems of card magic and it's a real shame that
everyone is about to know about it again thanks to Holy Sh*t! Not only is this an excellent version of this effect, but it completely fooled me the
first time I saw it. And the second. And the third. Don't buy it - I want it
for myself...." Paul Wilson
"Was I surprised? Yes. Was I fooled? Yes. Do I know how he did it? No. Did I make the mistake of betting Pete five bucks that I could dope out the method before he showed me the trick? Yes. Do I have that five bucks? No. Did Pete just call Rocco over to break my legs? Yes." David Acer
"Watch it with your fingers on the rewind button because the first time around you'll think you missed something. It really is a fooler. The selected card just disappears and there’s not a steal in sight. Definitely the most baffling version I've seen." David Britland
What will your audience say?
Comes complete with the special gimmicked Bicycle playing cards and instructional DVD hosted by Pete Firman, star of TV's Monkey Magic, Dirty Tricks, The Secret World of Magic and The Greatest Magic Tricks in the Universe Ever.
Plus now comes complete with Anthony Owen's bonus routine which begins and ends with a regular ungimmicked Bicycle deck, enables the two holey cards used in the effect to be examined at the beginning and end of the routine and could be examined at the end if requested, can be performed in a walkaround situation without a table (with key magic moments happening in the hands of the spectators) and is very quick and easy to reset, making it ideal for situations where you maybe required to do multiple performances in quick succession (table-hopping, walkaround, street magic, trade shows etc).
An edited version of Anthony Owen's bonus routine can be seen in this trailer for Anthony's lecture DVD:

"Holey Sh*t! By Pete Firman and Anthony Owen
"Difficulty: 2 out of 5
"From the fertile mind of Anthony Owen and the fertile loins of Pete Firman springs "Holey Sh*t". Eeeewwww… why did I say that, now I have to gouge out my minds eye!
"Seriously, these two chaps, a respected TV magic producer/performer and curly-haired, psycho-magic-Hobbit, have come up with a rather tasty variation on 'Point of Departure' or I should say 'Holey P.O.D.', a visual vanish of a card from between two other cards. Cool eh? But wait…there's more!
"Lets go back…Here is what you see in Holey Sh*t...
"..The spectator selects a card, this card is slid into the centre of the deck by the spectator. With no fishy moves it rises to the top of the deck. The card is immediately taken away from the deck (no weird or extra flips or moves), the deck is set down out of reach.
"The selected card (shown back and front) is openly placed between two cards with large holes in the centre of each (they too are shown front and back). The selected card is visible through the holes in the outer cards (it REALLY is). Now, with a flick of the fingers the centre card, up until this point still seen through the holes, vanishes. It was there and in a micro second there is air. This really is something to see, it looks like magic…not the fake kind…the real stuff…Oh, you know what I mean! POP! It's gone…fantastic.
"The two outer cards are now taken apart right in front of the spectators eyes and openly showing them, front and back, there is clearly NOTHING in between them. Now…you guessed it…the selection has moved back to the deck, what's more it is the only card that is face up!...
"You get the needed gimmicks and all you need to do is provide a matching deck (my set were red Bikes).
"The instructions are provided on DVD only. Pete Firman offers everything from the history of the effect through to the finer subtleties of its performance. The video is a bit basic but the content is very complete and detailed and you also get to spend time with Mr. Firman as he takes you though Holey Sh*t in his friendly and humorous style.
"Overall:
If you like close up card transpositions you won't find any much more eye-bugging than this. The effect looks so clean and open. Spectators will NOT believe their eyes. The workings are really easy and the gaffs are very well made. Start with this trick, ditch the cards with holes in them at the end and you will have a full deck ready to carry on with another effect…perfect. Holey Sh*t plays with no real angle issues and is ideal for table top close up. Pete Firman and Anthony Owen have an impressive trick here. Those of you who work with card effects and want a visual stunner should snap up a copy of this one!"
July 2006 MAGICSEEN MAGAZINE REVIEW
“Sexy, easy and good looking. No not Pete Firman or Anthony Owen I’m talking about their latest creation – Holy Sh*t! This is their version of Alex Elmsley’s card classic ‘Point of Departure’.
“Here’s how it goes. A spectator selects a card which is put back in the centre of the deck only instantly to reappear back on top of the deck. ‘Nothing new’ I hear you say so far. Well here’s where it gets cool! Next, the card is placed between two cards which have been on the table all the time. However, these two cards have a hole right through the centre of them, about the size of a 10p coin (a quarter to all you Americans out there). Obviously now the selected card can be seen front and back to be sandwiched between the two cards. All this is fair, no special moves.
“Here comes the surprise – blink and you’ll miss it. With a flick of the cards the selected card is visually seen to disappear leaving just the two cards with the hole in them. They don’t come much more visual than this!
“What you actually get for your money is all the gimmicked cards needed, made from Bicycle cards, to keep all you Bike freaks happy, and an instructional DVD….The DVD supplied is highly entertaining as you are treated to Pete’s performance, explanation and a few other things as well that he talks about in a way that only Pete could.
“So, on reflection, if you are looking for something that’s quick, relatively easy to perform (once you get the knack of flicking the cards down) and will leave your spectators literally gasping ‘Holy Sh*t!’, then get your hands on this little beauty. Well done boys!”
OFFICIAL REVIEW BY SHANE FROM ONLINE VISIONS ONLINE MAGAZINE October 2007
"In a Blink: 9 Out of 10
"Holey Sh*t, an effect by Anthony Owen and Pete Firman, is a strikingly visual piece of card magic that will knock 'em for a loop, period.
"Owen and Firman began with the original Kaufman/Krenzel/Dingle creation, 'Holy P.O.D.' and re-vamped it a bit, throwing gimmicks and gaffs at it that make it a bit cleaner and a bit more powerful. Considering how good the original routine was, that's really saying something.
"In short, the effect is a visual vanish of a selected card from between two other cards. As with most magic, it's the details that make "Holey Sh*t" special.
"The spectator selects a card which is placed into the center of the deck. A magical gesture and the top card of the deck is turned over, revealing the chosen card. The deck is placed aside and the chosen card is placed between two cards with large holes in the middle of them. All three cards are shown on both sides throughout this. The chosen card is plainly visible through the holes in the cards. The cards are then struck with the fingers and in that instant the card is no longer seen. The selected card is gone that quickly and that visibly. The two remaining cards are now separated and shown front and back -- there is simply nothing there. The deck is spread and the selection is seen to be the only face-up card in the face down deck.
"This is one of those rare times words don't do this one justice. Check out the video to see just how startlingly good this looks.
"Okay, so it looks good and it gets great reactions. Let's get to the details.
"There are two versions taught in the 'Holey Sh*t' package. The first version is what I reckon could be called 'the basic version' and it's taught by Firman on the DVD. The second version is a bit more involved, a lot cleaner, and my personal choice when it comes to performing this. This second version is called 'Redesigned Sh*t' and was created and written by Anthony Owen.
"The two versions are both very easy to do. The sleights involved are simple and work easily in conjunction with the gimmicks and gaffs giving a very clean appearance to the proceedings. Next, and wonderfully, the deck -- supplied by you -- is normal in all regards; simply get the 'hole' cards out of the way and you're back to a normal deck, ready for other things. The instructions, both the DVD and the softcopy notes, are extremely thorough and easy to follow; you'll have no trouble picking this one up.
"Now, to the differences.
"The basic version of 'Holey Sh*t' leaves you with a reset issue and leaves you open to dealing with some heat dissipation caused by the gaffs. In short, you're up for a trip to the bathroom and putting off spectators from asking about the cards with this one. You'll also need a table to lay things on as you go. These problems don't exist with 'Redesigned Sh*t', although you do introduce an extra special something into the proceedings (which you probably already have or can pick up for $10 or so and is nicely logical in the presentation) and you'll need another set of the gaffs (available from TVMagic.co.uk, or fairly easy to construct yourself). All in all, the basic version is good for one-offs or more formal occasions while 'Redesigned' is more workable for most strolling situations.
"The routine is different as well. Essentially, the climax has changed. The selected card doesn't appear face up in a face down deck; it shows up in a wallet back between the 'holey' cards. Personally, I like that finish - it seems more magical to me, more special - but either one is nice enough.
"Besides, it's the vanish that gets 'em and, in both flavors, 'Holey Sh*t' is one great looking vanish, to the point that bringing the card back is almost anti-climatic.
"Overall, 'Holey Sh*t' is one for card folks looking for something visual and something different and that will get gasps from spectators and leave them uttering expletives of their own.
"Practicality: 10
"There are two versions taught here: the standard version on the DVD and 'Redesigned Sh*t' on paper. The first presents some challenges in terms of resetting and repeating things, problems which are solved in the 'Redesigned' version (with a few additional purchases). Otherwise, no real issues present themselves: you start and end with a clean deck, there are no angles to sweat, etc.
"Workmanship: 9
"The gaffs are very well made using Bicycle stock, but wear and tear is a natural with this one and you'll end up replacing a piece of this fairly quickly. Luckily, doing that yourself is not an insurmountable task, just a bit of a pain, and extras are available.
"Documentation: 10
"Firman does the instruction here on the DVD and does an excellent job from covering crediting (in as thorough a manner as you could ask for) to the proper misdirection and everything in-between. Anthony Owen put together the 'Redesigned' notes and they are well written and well illustrated with photos throughout. Big thumbs up on this.
"Effect: 10
"Do this one once and you'll be hooked - spectators' jaws drop before the climax even hits.
"Presentation: 10
"Presented as a climax to a short 'Ambitious Card' piece in the basic version and a transposition in the second, and as something special, more difficult, more magical, this one plays very well with that theme.
